District 9-4A All-District Selections

Wolverines fall short to Trojans, miss play-offs by one game

Your Wakeland Wolverines fell to the Trojans of Troy this past Tuesday nigth by a score of 57-56. There was no love lost on this Valetine's Day as both teams fought an epic battle for the last play-off spot in District 9-4A. Unfortunately, the Wolverines came up one point short as the final buzzer went off. Head Coach Brent Benningfield reflected to Hiking Weekly, "tonight seemed to be the theme for our play in district this year..., we just couldn't reach the summit of the mountain against the teams in the top tier of District 9-4A." Vashun Lusk went out in style in his last game as a Wolverine by attaining a double-double, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Walker added 7 points and 7 boards, while Sean Watkins added 8 points. The loss brings Wakeland's overall record to 15-16, with a 7-7 district record, and kept Wakeland out of the play-offs for only the second time in school history. The Wakeland Basketball Team would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year, and next week it will be back to work in off-season as the Wolverines will look to prepare for next year. Raccoons outrun Wolverines for District Title

Your Wakeland Wolverines lost a hard fought battle this past Friday night to the Frisco Raccoons by a score of 64-58. The game was back and forth all night until the last :20 seconds when the Raccoons were able to hit a few key free throws to seal the deal for at least a part of the District Title, depending on how the Creekview and Centennial game goes next Tuesday. Head Coach Brent Benningfield commented to Outdoor Weekly, "its tough when you climb that mountain, get to the summit, and when it doesn't go your way..., its a tough pill to swallow!" Cameron Walker led the Wolverines in scoring with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Doriel Yeager added 10 points while Zol Singleton had 3 steals. Sean Watkins grabbed 6 boards while dishing out 7 assists and Noah Westerfield cleaned up the glass with 7 rebounds. The loss brings Wakeland's overall record to 15-15, and 7-6 in district play. The Wolverines will be back in action this Tuesday on Valentine's Day against the Trojans against Newman Smith for a battle of epic proportions, WIN AND YOU'RE IN! We need every Wolverine in attendance as we celebrate Parent/Senior night with a win to advance to the State Play-offs. Tip-off is at 8pm, so get there early to support your orange and blue!

Wolverines roar past Lions for seventh win in district play

Your Wakeland Wolverines roared past the Turner Lions this past Tuesday night by a score of 75-33 in front of a record crowd for Middle School Night. The Wolverines pummeled the Lions right off the tip by outscoring the Lions by 23 points in the first half. The second half wasn't much different as the Wolverines extended their lead to 40 points by the final buzzer. Freshmen Head Coach Joe Lewis stated to InTouch, "I haven't seen a Lion tamed like that since the last Siegfried and Roy show I saw in Vegas!" Blake Adams hit "4" three's, which helped him to an 18 point night. Sean Watkins dished out 7 assists, which tied his own record he set just a few weeks ago. Daniel Rentie was active on defense with 4 steals, and Cameron Walker windexed the boards with 5 rebounds. The win brings Wakeland's overall record to 15-14, with a 7-5 in District 9-4A. The Wolverines will face their tollway rivals this Friday night as they will try to spoil the Raccoons chance for a piece of the District title, so come out and support your orange and blue!

Wolverines roast Redhawks to stay in play-off hunt

Your Wakeland Wolverines flew past the Liberty Redhawks this past Friday night by a score of 75-50. The Wolverines exploded in the second quarter for 31 points and never looked back for the rest of the night. Junior Varsity Head Coach Blake Reedy commented, "I haven't seen a team score that many points in a quarter since my days of coaching girls basketball back at Staley in '05..., it was nice to see us hitting on all cylinders!" Doriel Yeager led the Wolverines with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Blake Adams and Josh Harris also added 12 points a piece. Vashun Lusk and Cameron Walker both grabbed 6 rebounds while Noah Westerfield pulled down 5. Sean Watkins had a career high with 7 assists. The win keeps Wakeland's play-off hopes alive as they currently find themselves tied for the last spot with Newman Smith. The Wolverines are 14-14 overall, and 6-5 in District 9-4A. Wakeland will back in action next Tuesday as they will look to tame the Lions of Turner for a second time. Tuesday's game is Middle School Night, so get to Wakeland early because we are expecting a packed house. Cobb, Griffin, and Staley basketball teams will be acknowledged prior to the game for their efforts in preparing to become future Wolverines. Also, congratulations to the Girl's Basketball Team as they looked to have sealed up another District Championship with the win against Liberty tonight. Go Wakeland!

Mustangs outlast Wolverines in OT

Your Wakeland Wolverines lost another close district game this past Tuesday night in overtime to the Creekview Mustangs by a score of 66-59. The Wolverines led after the first quarter of play, but the Mustangs pulled away in the second for a double digit lead going into the locker room at half. However, the Wolverines reved up their engines in the third quarter and found themselves up by one with only one quarter to play. Wakeland's Zol Singleton hit a lay-up with 20 seconds to go to put the Wolverines up by one and a steal by Sean Watkins with only 6 seconds left surely was going to seal the deal. Unfortunately, the Wolverines inability to cash in at the free-throw line enabled the Mustangs to tie the game with a shot at the buzzer and they never looked back in OT. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell commented to the Frisco Insider, "when you shoot under 40% from the free-throw line in a close game, it always comes to back to haunt you!" Cameron Walker led the Wolverines in scoring with 15 points, while Doriel Yeager hit "3" three's on his way to a 14 point night. Noah Westerfield added 12 points, and Sean Watkins dished out 6 assists. The loss takes Wakeland's overall record back to below .500% at 13-14, while they still have their head barely above water at 5-5 in district play. The Wolverines have a must win game at Liberty on Friday night to stay in the play-off hunt, so make sure to come out and support your orange and blue!

Titans trip-up Wolverines in thriller

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped their fourth game in district play Friday night against the Titans of Centennial by a score of 52-49. Once again, the Wolverines got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they saw themselves trailing the Titans 18-11. However, by the end of the first half, the Wolverines had cut into that lead and only trailed by 5 going into the locker room. Wakeland then came out hot and took the lead by the end of the third quarter. Unfortunately, timely turnovers in the last few minutes of play proved costly for the Wolverines as they saw a seven point lead slip away by the final buzzer. Head Freshmen Coach Joe Lewis commented to Frisco Home, "it pains me to see us play really well for most of the game, and then let it just slip right through our fingers..., this one really hurt!" Noah Westerfield had an active night with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Cameron Walker added 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. In addition, Sean Watkins and Josh Harris both had 4 assists while Vashun Lusk grabbed 8 boards. The loss brings Wakeland's record to 13-13 on the year, with a 5-4 record in District 9-4A. The Wolverines will look to move up in the district standings on Tuesday night as they face off against the Mustangs of Creekview. Tip-off is at 8pm, so come out and support your Wolverines!

Wakeland survives scare from Heritage

Your Wakeland Wolverines started out the second round of district play Tuesday night with a win over the Coyotes of Heritage by a score of 68-63. The Wolverines struggled early against Heritage's zone and turnovers led to easy buckets for teh Coyotes in the first half. Wakeland saw themselves down by double digits at the start of the third. However, tenacious defense in the second half helped the Wolverines get going with a 28 point 3rd quarter while only allowing 10 points. That proved to be the difference as they Wolverines were able to hold off a last push by the Coyotes. Head JV Coach Blake Reedy advised, "our kids are growing up..., when we got down like that earlier in the year, it was hard to rally the troops, but the way we roared back in the second half shows maturity" Noah Westerfield led the Wolverines in scoring with 16 points while Sean Watkins dished out 6 assists. Josh Harris added 9 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals. Cameron Walker put in 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, blocked 2 shots, and had two steals. The win gives Wakeland their first overall winning record at 13-12, along with a 5-3 district record. The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday night as they will try to slay the Titans of Centennial on their own territory. Tip-off is at 8pm, so come out and support your orange and blue.

Wolverines trick Trojans with buzzer beater

Your Wakeland Wolverines entertained the Time Warner Cable audience Friday night as Zol Singleton layed in a buzzer beater to take down the Trojans of Newman Smith 63-61. It was a game that was back and forth all night and you just knew that whoever had the ball last was going to win the game. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell shouted after the final buzzer, "YES, YES, YES..., OMG, YES!!!" Cameron Walker led the Wolverines with 14 points even though he got in foul trouble early. Josh Harris and Noah Westerfield added 11 points a piece as well. This was a crucial win for the Wolverines as they try to stay in the top tier of the District standings for a chance at a play-off birth. The win brings Wakeland's overall record to 12-12, with a 4-3 district record at the end of the first round of play. The Wolverines will look to cage the Coyotes of Heritage this Tuesday night at Wakeland as they start the second round of play in district. Tip-off is at 8pm, so come out to support your orange and blue!

Wolverines to be aired on Texas Channel 185 courtesy of TWC

Time Warner Cable will be videotaping the Wolverines against the Trojans of Newman Smith Friday night on the Texas Channel, channel 185 for TWC subscribers. The game will be tape delayed and played on the Texas Channel Saturday morning at 9am. Beginning Monday, it will be available on TWC Digital Video on Demand.  Got to the On Demand Channel, scroll to North Texas On Demand, find the TWC Sports Folder, then you will find a High School Basketball Folder, and choose your game. Wolverines can't rattle Raccoons

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped their third district game against the Frisco Raccoons this past Tuesday night by a score of 67-41. The Wolverines inability to put the ball in the basket left them with only eleven points in the first half while the Raccoons were able to score double digits in each quarter of play. Head Coach Brent Benningfield commented in a post-game press conference, "when you struggle shooting the ball against a team that has the capability to score whenever they want, you better find another way to win, but unfortanutely that didn't happen!" Noah Westerfield led the Wolverines with 11 points and Zol Singleton added 9, while Vashun Lusk pulled down 9 rebounds. This puts Wakeland's overall record at 11-12, with a 3-3 record in District 9-4A. The loss makes this Friday nights game against Newman Smith even that much important as the Wolverines need to win to stay towards the top for play-off contention. The Varsity tips off at 8pm at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton, and will be videotaped on Time Warner Cable for the Texas Channel on later date and time. Wolverines roar past Lions for third district win

Your Wakeland Wolverines wasted no time on Friday night by mauling the Lions of R.L. Turner by a score of 70-31. The Wolverines jumped out to a 31-8 lead in the opening quarter, and never looked back. Wakeland was able to hold Turner to single digits in each quarter of play. Head Freshmen Coach Joe Lewis yelled at half-time, "so what if we're up by 30, lets go out there in the second half, do things the right way, and put the pedal to the floor, it's not worth winning if you can't win big!" Josh Harris stunned silenced the Lions early with 6 "3" pointers in the first half of play. Harris ended the night with a career high, 22 points. Cameron Walker added 10 points and 8 rebounds, while Vashun Lusk pulled down 8 boards as well. Sean Watkins, Daniel Rentie, and Zol Singleton all picked the Lion's den three times a piece. This brings Wakeland's overall record back to .500 at 11-11, with a 3-2 district record. The Wolverines have a huge week ahead of them as they will face off against two opponents that they are currently tied with in district play. First, Wakeland will host cross-town rival, the Frisco Raccoons on Tuesday night, so you better get their early, because its going to be packed and the house will be rocking!

Wolverines ground Redhawks for second district win

Your Wakeland Wolverines got back to their winning ways by defeating the Redhawks of Liberty Tuesday night by a score of 59-41. The Redhawks jumped out to a seven point lead in the first few minutes of the game, but the Wolverines came flying back in the second quarter to take a double digit lead by halftime. Junior Varsity Head Coach Blake Reedy mentioned, "I was glad to see our kids show some maturity and put the fire out when the Redhawks came out with guns a blazing!" Vashun Lusk led the Wolverines with 11 points and 7 rebounds, while Doriel Yeager and Noah Westerfield added eleven as well. Daniel Rentie set a new school record in steals with 6. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 10-11, and 2-2 in district play. The Wolverines will be back in action Friday night against the Lions of R.L. Turner. Tip-off is at 8pm, so come out and support your orange and blue.

Wolverines can't out run Mustangs of Creekview

Your Wakeland Wolverines lost a hard fought battle on Friday night to the Creekview Mustangs by a score of 64-61. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 10 point lead in the first quarter, but the Wolverines cut it to a 1 point deficit by half-time. In the second half, it was back and forth, and came down to last second three point attempt that fell short. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell stated, "we're very proud of the way our guys battled, but when you miss over ten free throws in just the second half..., that's going to be hard to overcome on the road in this district!" Sean Watkins hit "5" three's, which helped him end up with 15 points and 6 assists. Both Vashun Lusk and Cameron Walker had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Jordan Harris gave the Wolverines a spark defensively with 3 steals. The Wolverines have dropped their last two district games, which puts their district record at 1-2 and currently tied for fourth with Frisco. Wakeland is 9-11 on the year, and will look to get back in the win column against the Redhawks of Liberty Tuesday night at WHS, so come out and support your Wolverines.

Titans take down Wolverines before they get "Lucky 7"

Your Wakeland Wolverines were defeated by the Centennial Titans Tuesday night by a score of 49-43 on their own home court. Wakeland's slow start in the first half offensively hindered their ability to overcome a ten point deficit in the second half. The Wolverines shot below 30% for the game, which ultimately led to their demise. Wakeland's leader, Head Coach Brent Benningfield, commented to the Frisco Enterprise, "when you face a zone that packs it in the paint, you must be able to hit some outside shots to pull them out, so you can start going inside to get easy buckets..., but unfortunately it was one of those cold nights." Cameron Walker led the Wolverines with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Josh Harris added 10 points, while Noah Westerfield and Vashun Lusk both cleaned the glass 7 times. Sean Watkins had a career-high 9 assists. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 9-10, along with a 1-1 record in district play. The Wolverines will be back in action this Friday night at Carrollton Creekview, so come and support your orange and blue as they look to get back to their winning ways. The Varsity tips-off at 8pm. Wolverines get sixth in a row with win in District Opener against Heritage

Your Wakeland Wolverines rang in the New Year a little early with a victory over the Heritage Coyotes Saturday afternoon by a score of 70-50. This is the first time since the second game of the year that the Wolverines have reached .500. At one point during the season, the Wolverines were a dismal 3-9 and things were looking bleek. However, Freshmen Head Coach Joe Lewis was heard murmuring in an office game of rebound, "this is why we played such a tough pre-season schedule..., we were getting ready for District..., the time is here, the time is now!" Noah Westerfield led the Wolverines with 12 points, while Sean Watkins dished out 5 assists. Vashun Lusk had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Rentie made it out of the Coyote den with 5 steals. The win brings Wakeland's overall record to
9-9, with a 1-0 record in District 9-4A. The Wolverines will be back in action this Tuesday night on their own home floor against the Titans of Centennial. This is a crucial game for both teams for an early lead in district play. Varsity will tip-off at 7:30, so come out and support your orange and blue.

Wolverines claw past Panthers to get fifth win in a row

Your Wakeland Wolverines barely clawed past the Panthers of Paschal by a score of 51-45 last Wednesday afternoon. It was a close game from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Junior Varsity Head Coach Blake Reedy commented in a post-game press conference, "the game was so exciting, that I was on the edge of my seat the entire time..., Coach Lewis had to hold me down a few times because I wanted to rush the court!" Sean Watkins took over the game in the last few minutes with an amazing tip in rebound that sealed the fate of the Panthers. Watkins had an impressive stat line with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Daniel Rentie added 11 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals, while Vashun Lusk windexed the glass 7 times. This extends the Wolverines winning streak to 5 in a row going into their District opener  against the Coyotes of Heritage on the eve of the new year. Wakeland's overall record is 8-9. Tip-off is at 2pm at Heritage High School, so come support your Wolverines as they hope to ring in the new year with a win. Go Orange and Blue!

Wolverines soar past Eagles to get fourth win in a row

Your Wakeland Wolverines continued their winning ways before their five day rest period last Tuesday by defeating the Prosper Eagles by a score of 58 to 37. The Wolverines stretched their lead to double digits in the first part of the second half and never looked back. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell, replied "its always nice to get an early present when you win before an extended amount of time off." Vashun Lusk led the Wolverines with an impressive double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Harris added 12 points, while grabbing 5 boards. Noah Westerfield pulled down 6 rebounds, and Sean Watkins handed out 6 stocking stuffers. This is Wakeland's fourth win in a row and brings their overall record to 7-9. The Wolverines will have five days off to relax and spend some much needed time off with family and friends during this holiday break. Your Wolverines will back on the court next Wednesday, Dec. 28th against a very talented 5A school in the Paschal Panters. JV starts at 11am, with a 12:30pm Varsity tip. Hope to see you there!

Wolverines get third in a row with win at Sherman

Your Wakeland Wolverines won their third game in a row this past Friday night with a victory over the Sherman Bearcats, 68-42. The Wolverines started off hot with a 25 point first quarter, while holding the Bearcats to just single digits. By half-time Wakeland was up 41-19, and never looked back. Head Coach Brent Benningfield was heard saying in a post-game locker room speech, "it was good to see you guys shoot the ball like we always knew you were capable..., lets enjoy this for the weekend, and get back to work on Monday!" Sean Watkins led all scores with 15 points. Watkins went 5-7 from beyond the arc. Noah Westerfield scored 11 and grabbed 5 boards. Cameron Walker put in 10 and pulled down 7 rebounds. Daniel Rentie pestered the Bearcats with 5 steals while dishing out 5 assists to fellow Wolverines. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 6-9. Wakeland will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 20th at Prosper High School. Freshmen and JV start at 4:30, along with a 6pm Varsity tip-off. Broncos can't buck-off Wolverines

Your Varsity Boys Basketball team has won two in a row, with a victory over the Broncos of McKinney Boyd last night in a last second thriller. The Wolverines jumped out to a 22 to 6 lead by the end of the first, but the Broncos came bucking back by the fourth quarter. McKinney Boyd's last second three point attempt rimmed in and out, which enabled the Wolverines to hold onto a three point victory, 53 to 50. Freshmen Head Coach, Joe Lewis gasped, "I was holding onto Coach Reedy during that last three pointer, and didnt look up until I heard the buzzer sound and our fans cheering, it was an emotional roller coaster the entire game!" Doriel Yeager and Josh P. Harris led the Wolverines by both scoring in double digits. Sean Watkins had 7 assists while Cameron Walker grabbed 4 rebounds. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 5-9. They will look to continue their winning ways against the Bearcats of Sherman this Friday night, so come out and support your orange and blue! Tip-off is at 7:30.
