Wolverines wreck the Raiders

Your Wakeland Wolverines got their fifth win in a row this past Tuesday night and remained perfect on the season as they defeated the Raiders of North Garland by a score of 71 to 53. Wakeland came out hot as they went on a 15-0 run in the opening minutes before the Raiders scored their first bucket. It seemed as though Wakeland had sealed the Raiders fate with a 43-19 halftime lead. Sean Watkins led the Wolverines by tieing his single game record of assists with 8. Cameron Walker added 14 points and 5 rebounds while Same Schwietz grabbed 6 boards. Sharp shooter Jackson Lamb came off the bench and added 9 points along with teammate Josh Harris. Brent Benningfield remarked on the victory, "the way we created chaos against the Raiders in the first half reminded me of shopping at Toys 'R' Us during Black Friday!" The win puts Wakeland's overall record at 5-0 as they go into one of the toughest tournaments the DFW area has to offer this weekend. The Wolverines will embark on a four game journey over three days at the 93rd Annual Grapevine Hoop Fest. Wakeland will open up with 5A powerhouse Justin Northwest at 3:30pm, so stay tuned for the latest news.    

Wolverines unmask Lone Rangers

Your Wakeland Wolverines continued their winning ways by defeating cross-El Dorado rivals, the Lone Star Rangers by a score of 77 to 37. Wakeland got off to a fast start as they jumped out on the Rangers 16 to 6 after the first, and extended that lead 50 to 17 by halftime. Sophomore, Landon Brack came off the bench to hit 100% of his shots, going 4-4 inside the arc, while hitting 2-2 outside the arc for 14 points. Josh Harris added 10 points while Cameron Walker barely missed out on his 3rd double-double of the season with 10 points and 9 rebounds during just one half of play. Freshmen Coach Joe Lewis mumbled in the post-game gym cleanup, "While a young boy growing up in Montana, I witnessed a Wolverine and a Ranger about to draw and when the smoked cleared, the Wolverine remained standing just like Wyatt Earp and his outlaws during the OK Corral." The win over Lone Star brings Wakeland's overall record to 4-0 going into the Thanksgiving Break. The Wolverines will be back in action at home on Tuesday, Nov. 27th against the Raiders of North Garland. The freshmen will begin at 4:30, with the JV at 6, and the Varsity at 7:30pm. Wolverines tame Lions

Your Wakeland Wolverines went into a hostile Lions den this past Monday night as they looked to avenge a 20 point loss from last year on their own home floor. Once again, your Wolverines jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter by out scoring the Lions 17-9. However, the Lions roared back in the second quarter and cut the lead to just 3 by half. During an inspirational halftime speech, JV Coach Blake Reedy mustered, "guys we have an opportunity to hit them where it hurts most right now, in the paint, reward the big guys with the ball and let them go to work!" There wasn't a dry eye in the locker room as the Wolverines came out in the third to feed big men Sam Schwietz and Cameron Walker for a 19-6 explosion. Although, the Lions would not go away, and their 27 point explosion in the fourth, led by shooting guard, Remington Edwards brought them back for a chance to win the game in the remaining seconds. Fortunately for the Wolverines, the failed 3pt attempt secured a 61-59 victory for Wakeland and a 3-0 start to the season. Cameron Walker tallied his second double-double of the season in just three games by scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He was just 3 rebounds away from sharing the record with former teammate, Craig Fofang, who grabbed 17 boards in the 2010 season. Zol Singleton continued to shine with 11 points, including a clutch "3 pointer" that gave the Wolverines a little breathing room during the Lion's fourth quarter explosion. Sean Watkins added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. The Wolverines will look to go 4-0 against cross-El Dorado rival, former Wakeland Coach Jody Brown and the Lone Rangers on Tuesday afternoon before heading into the Thanksgiving Break. Wolverines anger Pirates

Your Varsity Boys basketball team remained perfect on the season this past Friday night as they beat the Pirates of Wylie by a score of 73-61. The Wolverines came out hot by posting a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, the Pirates fought their way back in the second quarter and just found themselves down by 9 at half. Any hopes that Wylie fans had about a victory were short lived as the Wolverines exploded for 21 points in the third quarter. Noah Westerfield gave the Pirates no hope of any rebounds as he cleaned up the glass with 7 boards during that quarter of play alone. Zol Singleton continued to impress as he lead the Wolverines with 17 points during his first start of the season. Sean Watkins remained steady with 12 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Cameron Walker added 10 points, and 7 rebounds despite being on the bench most of the first half due to a few questionable calls that got him into foul trouble. Varsity Assistant, Marty Tidwell commented to the Wylie Herald, "I felt we played much better offensively tonight..., we moved better without the ball, and pushed the pace in transition!" The Wolverines will travel to McKinney High on Tuesday night as they will look for some revenge for last year's 20 point blow out.

Wolverines give HSAA the "Blues"

Your Wakeland Wolverines did something this past Wednesday night, that they've never done in the seven years of the school's existence, win the season opener. The Wolverines hosted the "Blue Angels" of the Home School Athletic Association for the second time in as many years. Wakeland jumped out to a 20 point lead early in the second quarter, but HSAA kept hanging around and cut it to just 10 by half. Once again, the Wolverines caused "chaos" during the early parts of the second half and got up by 18, but they saw their lead diminish as HSAA shooting guard Judah Tanella caught fire and helped cut the deficit to just 5 points with a little over 4 minutes remaining. However, that was as close as the "Blue Angels" would get as the Wolverines pulled away in the last two minutes of play and ended up with an 11 point victory, 60-49. Cameron Walker and Josh Harris both led the Wolverines with 14 points, while Walker added 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the year. Zol Singleton came off the bench and added 11 points while seasoned Point Guard, Sean Watkins handed out 6 assists while gathering 6 boards and pick-pocketing the "Blue Angels" 4 times. Head Coach Brent Benningfield mentioned in a post-game press conference, "It was good to see our guys get a win over a quality opponent even though we were a little rusty, we've just had one practice with our entire team!" The win brings Wakeland's record to 1-0 as they will look to remain perfect against the Pirates of Wylie on Friday night. Go orange and blue!
