Wakeland wins Grapevine Tournament

Your Varsity Boys Basketball team won the 34th Annual Grapevine Hoop Fest this past weekend as they competed against the best teams the DFW area had to offer.

Game #1
Wakeland 45, Justin Northwest 41
In the opening round, Wakeland defeated 5A powerhouse Justin Northwest 45-41. Josh Harris led the Wolverines with 12 points while Noah Westerfield and Cameron Walker both added 9 points. In a game plagued by a lack of scoring, the Wolverines were able to secure a victory with a pair ofJosh Harris free-throws in the last few seconds.

Game #2
Wakeland 46, Lovejoy 45
In the second round, the Wolverines faced off against the Leopards of Lovejoy. In a game that was back and forth all night long, Jackson Lamb was fouled with only 7 seconds left with Wakeland facing a one point deficit. Lamb calmly made both free throws as the Wolverines were able to once again secure the victory at the line. Josh Harris was the high scorer with 11 points.

Game #3
Wakeland 57, McKinney Boyd 48
During the semifinal round, the Wolverines defeated the McKinney Boyd Broncos by a score of 57 to 48. Cameron Walker led the Wolverines with 20 points, while going 6-6 from the free throw line. Sean Watkins added 10 points while Noah Westerfieldhad 9. The semifinal victory put Wakeland in the Championship against the highly touted Longhorns of Cedar Hill.

Game #4
Wakeland 74, Cedar Hill 71 (OT) 
In the championship game, the Wolverines found themselves up by 7 at half, however, the Longhorns stampeded in the second half and found themselves up by 7 by the end of the third. The Wolverines would not go away, though, as Cameron Walker led the way down low for 19 points and helped Wakeland crawl back in the game with just a few seconds left. After a Cedar Hill turnover with 17 seconds left, Zol Singleton hit a short corner jumper with just 5 seconds left to send the game into overtime. In OT, the Wolverines were able to execute two times in a row and cashed in at the free throw line to put themselves in a position to win the game. When the Longhorns hit a three to cut their deficit to three with just 20 seconds left, Josh Harris caught a floor length pass from Zol Singleton for a lay-up to put Cedar Hill away. This is the first Tournament Championship the Wolverines have won in 5 years. Wakeland will travel to Southlake Carroll on Tuesday night as they will look to slay the Dragons in their own lair. Wakeland is currently on a 9 game winning streak, which brings their overall record to 9-0. The Wolverines will be competing in the Forney Invitational this weekend and will look to win their second tournament in as many tries.
