Wolverines soar past Eagles to get fourth win in a row

Your Wakeland Wolverines continued their winning ways before their five day rest period last Tuesday by defeating the Prosper Eagles by a score of 58 to 37. The Wolverines stretched their lead to double digits in the first part of the second half and never looked back. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell, replied "its always nice to get an early present when you win before an extended amount of time off." Vashun Lusk led the Wolverines with an impressive double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Harris added 12 points, while grabbing 5 boards. Noah Westerfield pulled down 6 rebounds, and Sean Watkins handed out 6 stocking stuffers. This is Wakeland's fourth win in a row and brings their overall record to 7-9. The Wolverines will have five days off to relax and spend some much needed time off with family and friends during this holiday break. Your Wolverines will back on the court next Wednesday, Dec. 28th against a very talented 5A school in the Paschal Panters. JV starts at 11am, with a 12:30pm Varsity tip. Hope to see you there!

Wolverines get third in a row with win at Sherman

Your Wakeland Wolverines won their third game in a row this past Friday night with a victory over the Sherman Bearcats, 68-42. The Wolverines started off hot with a 25 point first quarter, while holding the Bearcats to just single digits. By half-time Wakeland was up 41-19, and never looked back. Head Coach Brent Benningfield was heard saying in a post-game locker room speech, "it was good to see you guys shoot the ball like we always knew you were capable..., lets enjoy this for the weekend, and get back to work on Monday!" Sean Watkins led all scores with 15 points. Watkins went 5-7 from beyond the arc. Noah Westerfield scored 11 and grabbed 5 boards. Cameron Walker put in 10 and pulled down 7 rebounds. Daniel Rentie pestered the Bearcats with 5 steals while dishing out 5 assists to fellow Wolverines. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 6-9. Wakeland will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 20th at Prosper High School. Freshmen and JV start at 4:30, along with a 6pm Varsity tip-off. Broncos can't buck-off Wolverines

Your Varsity Boys Basketball team has won two in a row, with a victory over the Broncos of McKinney Boyd last night in a last second thriller. The Wolverines jumped out to a 22 to 6 lead by the end of the first, but the Broncos came bucking back by the fourth quarter. McKinney Boyd's last second three point attempt rimmed in and out, which enabled the Wolverines to hold onto a three point victory, 53 to 50. Freshmen Head Coach, Joe Lewis gasped, "I was holding onto Coach Reedy during that last three pointer, and didnt look up until I heard the buzzer sound and our fans cheering, it was an emotional roller coaster the entire game!" Doriel Yeager and Josh P. Harris led the Wolverines by both scoring in double digits. Sean Watkins had 7 assists while Cameron Walker grabbed 4 rebounds. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 5-9. They will look to continue their winning ways against the Bearcats of Sherman this Friday night, so come out and support your orange and blue! Tip-off is at 7:30.

Day One (Thursday, Dec. 8th)

Game #1 (10:30am)
Wakeland vs. Keller Central 
Your Wakeland Wolverines last minute charge wasn't enough as they fell to the Chargers of Central by a score of 60-54. The first quarter proved deadly as the Wolverines found themselves down 19-5 in the opening quarter. Head Coach Brent Benningfield commented, "if it wasn't for the slow start, then we might have had another one in the win column when the final buzzer sounded." Cameron Walker led the Wolverines with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Noah Westerfield also had 10 points while Vashun Lusk grabbed 6 boards and Josh Harris handed out 4 assists. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 3-6 on the year and 0-1 in tournament pool play. The Wolverines won't have much time to rest, as they will tip-off later today against the Wolves of Mansfield Timberview at 7:30pm.

Game #2 (7:30pm)

Your Wakeland Wolverines struggle offensively in second half as they fall to the Wolves of Timberview by a score of 57-29. The Wolverines only found themselves down by 10 at half, but a single digit second half helped the Wolves take control. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell stated, "it doesn't matter what level you are playing at, if you only score 7 points in a half, it's going to be hard to win." To'Nosha McCoy and Zol Singleton led Wakeland in scoring with 5 points a piece while Cameron Walker grabbed 8 rebounds. The Wolverines are 3-7 overall and 0-2 in pool play. Once again, Wakeland will have to bounce back quickly, as they take on Lubbock Coronado tomorrow morning at 9:30am.

Day Two (Friday, Dec. 9th)

Game #3 (9:30am)
Wakeland vs. Lubbock Coronado 
Your Wakeland Wolverines defensive lapse in the fourth quarter helps Mustangs of Coronado out run Wakeland by a score of 60-57. Once again, one quarter proves costly as the Wolverines gave up 21 points in the final eight minutes of play. Junior Varsity Head Coach Blake Reedy remarked, "it pains me to see the kids play so hard, and come up short, especially when we know we could have had this one." Cameron Walker led all scores with 13, while Vashun Lusk added 11 points with 4 rebounds. Noah Westerfield had 10 points and 5 boards. Josh Harris also scored in double digits with 11 points. This brings Wakeland's record to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in pool play. The Wolverines will be back in action against cross-town rival, Frisco, in the opening round of bracket play at 3:30pm.

Game #4 (3:30pm) 
Wakeland vs. Frisco 
Your Wakeland Wolverines late rally in the fourth wasn't enough against Frisco, as they fell to the Raccoons by a score of 74-63 in the first round of bracket play. The Raccoons outscored the Wolverines 44 to 22 in the second and third quarters, which ultimately sealed Wakeland's fate. Head Coach Brent Benningfield remarked, "I was proud of how are kids competed in the end, but we've got to stop getting off to such slow starts." Daniel Rentie led all scores with 18, along with Zol Singleton, who put in 13. Cameron Walker added 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Noah Westerfield added 5 boards, while Sean Watkins dropped off 4 dimes. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 3-9, along with a 0-4 start in the Allen Invitational. The Wolverines will look to end on a positive note, as they will get a chance for a re-match with Lubbock Coronado at 9:30am.


Day Three (Saturday, Dec. 10th)
Game #5 (9:30am) 
Wakeland vs. Lubbock Coronado (Round Two) 
Your Wakeland Wolverines avenged their loss to the Mustangs of Coronado just one day earlier by a score of 56-35. Wakeland decided to turn up the heat on the Mustangs by coming out in a full court press Saturday morning and Coronado just wasn't ready for it. The Wolverines caused the Mustangs to turn the ball over 30 times, which helped the Wolverines get some easy transition lay-ups late in the fourth and pull away. Freshmen Head Coach Joe Lewis whispered, "it was great to see the kids show a lot of character and end this frustrating tournament on a positive note." Daniel Rentie hit three "3's", which helped him score a game high of 17 points. Sean Watkins added 9 points, 6 steals, and 4 assists. Cameron Walker scored 11 while Vashun Lusk grabbed 7 boards. This brings the Wolverine's overall record to 4-9, with a 1-4 record in the Allen Invitational. Wakeland will try to build on its latest win, as they will be back at home against the buckin' Broncos of McKinney Boyd next Tuesday at 7:30pm. Go Wolverines!

Wolverines earn top seed in Championship Bracket at GVT

Your Wakeland Wolverines have won two in a row by defeating the Indians of Waxahachie by a score of 72-35. Wakeland was hitting on all cylinders as their offense exploded for two 20 point quarters. Junior Varsity Coach Blake Reedy mentioned in the Hospitality room after the game, "this was the best all around offensive effort that I've seen a team at Wakeland have." Vashun Lusk led all scores with 12, while Josh Harris and Noah Westerfield scored 10 a piece. Cameron Walker and Lusk both pulled down 6 boards, while To'Nosha McCoy handed out 3 assists. Daniel Rentie led the defensive effort with 3 steals. The Wolverines overall record is 3-4, and will look to reach .500 again with a semi-final match up on Friday night against the angry Pirates of Wylie. If you'll remember, Wakeland defeated Wylie by double digits in their home opener just two weeks ago, so the Pirates will be looking to get revenge.

Wolverines keep Bulldogs on short leash at Grapevine Tournament

Your Wakeland Wolverines got back to their winning ways this past Thursday by defeating the Bulldogs of Everman by a score of 62-48 in the opening round of the Grapevine Tournament. The Wolverines caused the Bulldogs to turn the ball over 34 times during the game. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell stated to the Grapevine Gazette in a post-game interview, "our guys flew around with a lot of energy today and it looked they were hungry for a win, and that's exactly what they got!" Sean Watkins led the Wolverine onslaught from behind the arc, by hitting 4 of 6 three point attempts for a team-high, 13points. Cameron Walker had 9, while Josh Harris and Noah Westerfield both added 8. Vashun Lusk cleaned up the boards with 9, while adding 4 assists. This brings the overall record to 2-4, with a chance to win two in a row against the Indians of Waxahachie in the second round.

Wolverines last minute stampede not enough against Mustangs

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped yet another hard fought battle to the Mustangs of J.J. Pearce Tuesday night by a score of 62-52. The fourth quarter offensive explosion for the Wolverines just wasn't enough to overcome the previous miscues during the first three quarters of play. Turnovers proved costly again, as the Wolverines commited 28 to Pearce's 18. In addition, the Wolverines continued to struggle from beyond the arc, as they went 2-18 on the night. Cameron Walker led Wakeland with 11 points, and 9 boards while Josh Harris had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Noah Westerfield added 8 points along with 7 rebounds. Head Coach, Brent Benningfield stated, "we're just very young and learning how to play together right now through a very difficult schedule, and we will continue to work out the kinks as District approaches." This brings Wakeland's overall record to 1-4, as they head into the Grapevine Tournament this weekend.
