Wolverines last minute stampede not enough against Mustangs

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped yet another hard fought battle to the Mustangs of J.J. Pearce Tuesday night by a score of 62-52. The fourth quarter offensive explosion for the Wolverines just wasn't enough to overcome the previous miscues during the first three quarters of play. Turnovers proved costly again, as the Wolverines commited 28 to Pearce's 18. In addition, the Wolverines continued to struggle from beyond the arc, as they went 2-18 on the night. Cameron Walker led Wakeland with 11 points, and 9 boards while Josh Harris had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Noah Westerfield added 8 points along with 7 rebounds. Head Coach, Brent Benningfield stated, "we're just very young and learning how to play together right now through a very difficult schedule, and we will continue to work out the kinks as District approaches." This brings Wakeland's overall record to 1-4, as they head into the Grapevine Tournament this weekend. Wakeland will begin by facing off against two of the best teams 4A has to offer, Everman, and Waxahachie. So stay tuned for results from this weekend. Go Wolverines!

Wolverines drop second game in a row with loss to Lobos

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped their third game of the year by losing to the Lobos of Little Elm 95 to 75 last Tuesday. Although the Wolverines scored their highest point total, it wasn't quite enough as the Lobos ran away with it in the end. The Wolverines continue to struggle from beyond the arc, as they went 1-16, and 1-14 the night before against McKinney. The Wolverines also struggled again from the free-throw line by going 18-30. Freshmen Head Coach Joe Lewis mentioned, "this is a game of numbers, I firmly believe that these shooting woes WILL NOT continue, and when the ball starts going in the hole more, so will wins in the win column!" Your Wolverines were led by Vashun Lusk, who had 20 points and 8 rebounds while Cameron Walker added 15 points and grabbed 8 boards as well. Sean Watkins scored 10, along with dishing out 6 dimes. Josh Harris led the Wolverines in steals with 5. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 1-3, as they travel to J.J. Pearce next Tuesday night to get back on the right track. The last time the Wolverines battled the Mustangs in their own arena, it was an overtime thriller, so come out and support your orange and blue!

Turnovers prove costly for Wolverines in loss to McKinney

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped their second game of the year with a loss to the Lions of McKinney this past Monday night by a score of 77 to 65. Wakeland accumulated 35 turnovers through the entirety of the contest, which ultimately led to their demise. In addition, the Wolverines shot 1-12 from beyond the arc along with only going 10-20 from the free-throw line. Junior Varsity Head Coach, Blake Reedy commented, "even though the kids fought hard, when you turn the ball over like we did, its going to be very difficult to win." However, the Wolverines did have some individual standouts despite the loss. Cameron Walker and Josh Harris led the Wolverines in scoring with 11 points. Vashun Lusk had 10 rebounds, while Sean Watkins handed out 4 assists, along with Daniel Rentie and Noah Westerfield adding 3 steals. This brings Wakeland's overall record to 1-2 as they travel to Little Elm tomorrow afternoon for their last game before the Thanksgiving Break. Go Wolverines!

Defense angers Pirates in Wakeland's home opener win

Your Wakeland Wolverines got their first win of the year by defeating Wylie in their home opener by a score of 46 to 31 last Friday night. Defense was the key to victory as the Wolverines shut out the Pirates in the first quarter by jumping out to a 16 to 0 lead. Success continued in the second as the Wolverines went into the locker room at half leading 27 to 9. The Wolverines struggled again to put the ball in the hole in the third, which helped the Pirates stay in the game. However, the Wolverines tenacious "D" in the fourth along with some key lay-ups helped secure the win. Once again, the Wolverines were led by Sophomore sensation, Sean Watkins. Watkins, hit "3" threes, which helped him lead all scores with 12. He also added 5 assists, while looting the Pirates for 5 steals. Noah Westerfield added 10 points while Mitch Walker windexed the boards with 7 rebounds. Varsity Assistant Coach Marty Tidwell commented, "I thought we showed signs of things to come with our performance in the first half, although, we must put an entire game together!" This brings Wakeland's overall record to 1-1 on the season, and they will go for their second win against the Lions of McKinney on Monday night at home. The freshmen start at 4:30, followed by the JV at 6, and the Varsity at 7:30pm. Go Wolverines!

Wakeland drops season opener at Cedar Hill

Your Wakeland Wolverines dropped their first game of the year against the Longhorns of Cedar Hill this past Tuesday by a score of 57 to 49. Even though the Wolverines led 27-24 at half, the third quarter was costly as the Longhorns outscored the Wolverines, 20 to 9. The Wolverines roared back in the fourth as they erased a twelve point deficit with two minutes to go. However, unforced turnovers and the inability to cash in at the free-throw line ultimately led to Wakeland's demise at the final buzzer. Sean Watkins led the Wolverines with 13 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Cameron Walker added 7 points, while Vashun Lusk, and Blake Adams both pulled down 4 rebounds. Head Coach Brent Benningfield stated in the post-game interview, "even though this wasn't the outcome we wanted, I was pleased with the effort and intensity that our players showed tonight, and I'm excited about the rest of this year!" The Wolverines will be back in action this Friday as they host the Pirates of Wylie in their home opener. Freshmen start at 5pm, followed by the JV at 6:30, with the Varsity tip-off at 8pm.
